The Indus Script

The Indus Script is one of those scripts that every few years some one claims to have deciphered but not quite rather like Cretan Linear A.  Some scholars claim its ideographic and others that its an ancestor of  at least some of the signs in the Brahmi scripts. Id any script knows a Rosetta stone its this one?

Unfortunately the ancient Indians do not seem to have been partial to doing multilingual inscriptions on pillar and the latest known inscriptionsdiscovered so far  date to about 1100 BC so there's no overlap with the first forms of syllabic writing just vague similarities of some signs.

The people Dravidian or IndoEuropean who used this script in the Indus valley certainly had some fine engravers though and a fascination with bulls.

A Wiener Werkstatte Book plate

The range of work done by the various graphic designers craftspersons and artistst associated with the Wiener Werkstatte really was quite extraordinary. Jewellery, silverwear, architecture, book plates, posters, book covers, dresses, textiles, post cards, book illustration, and furniture.

I've tried to find images that are not just the same ones you see again and again in textbooks.

Hope you're enjoying them?!

MY FAVORITE WIENER WERKSTATTE BOOK

This is the cover on a fabulous book on Wiener Werkstatte. Many books have been written on this Viennese group but I'm particularly fond of this one.

I highly recommend you buy or borrow it if you can afford or find it!

Munjado

MUNJADO

Letters as Art

Munjado type screens seem to be unique to Korea. The Eight Images shown here are based on the characters that represent 8 Confucian virtues .

The letter is the art but instead of black and white calligraphy there's color added and I do wonder if some painter was an embroidered character and got the idea of turning the character into a shape and adding color from seeing an embroidered banner or robe?

Wonderful  Wiener Werkstatte WOMEN

This week we're featuring MARIA LIKARZ

Like many other people involved in the Wiener Werkstatte she worked in more than one medium desiging textiles such as these but also graphics like this next image.

You will notice if you a variety of postcards and graphics designed by WW artists that patterns similar to textiles designed by them also appear in illustrations.

Here's a couple of more textile designs.

Gorgeous arent they!? One good thing about Google is the way its making it easier to half forgotten artists back to the public eye. While I aw searching for WW imagery I also found references to a female Austrian Impressionist artist I''ll share soon with you !
