shape does not seem to make much difference however the more edges to the shape the more the edge of the filter changes ...

here's my experiment to try and get an effect like the gold sprinkles used in japanese makie lacquer 

I think what the base color is does make a significant difference however getting the texture not to look bumpy is still an issue and my next test will be applying some gimp effects to see if I can flatten those bumps without losing the metallic effects.

More Gold - 2 Illumined Manuscripts

This is an illustration to the popular Middle French poem the Roman de la Rose 

The illuminator has restrained the gold to the background to emphasize the foreground blues and reds.

Western European artists were not the only people using gold though!

Here's an example of its use with an Arabic text!

Both cultures may have been inspired by the Byzantines also using gold.

GOLD GOLD GOLD

For a summer theme I'll be looking at the diverse ways artists use gold in calligraphy illuminated manuscripts and other media. Also not just West European manuscripts! 

But first here's gold unprocessed and not refined. This nugget has high levels of gold. Normally its just specks or streaks imbedded with other ores.

But htat raw material can be refined flattened cast pounded hammered turned into jewellery coins or  powder for making gold ink or lacquer ...

and yet depicted without using gold at all as in this painting

 in which the jewellery is gold and gold brocade is worn
