This demo shows how black as a base layer under red plus filters works in comparision to not having an underlayer.

Even under a really "thick" materials filter like Cracked lava there's a clear difference!

Under a semi- transparent filter like Tartan the reds are intensified.

Try it for yourself with a variety of filters!

Why use a black base layer ?

I started with black and blue squares and added 3 different texture filters to the blue squares using #Inkscape. I hope your browser allows you to see how the black base layer creates depth in the squares in the middle column?  I made duplicates of the blue texture squares and moved them over copies of the black squares. Of course you don't have to use squares or these texture filters but I hope this gives you ideas for your own work? You could also do further edits in Gimp or other programs.

ITs Inktober again so let us consider the role of black.

I'ld like  you to think about this old 19th German diagram not co sits OLD 

but cos its STILL RELEVANT.

Whoever created it thought about transitions and gradients from white to black and vice versa and how black darkens other colors.

Here's another example the power of black to change colors from one of my older Inkscape demos.

For each row I shifted the colors further toward black.

There will be more discussion and demos of black and Ink throughout this month .

There are few filters with names starting with the letter D so for this years ABC of Inkscape Filter Demos I decided on D for DARK

I have once again been contemplating the problem of how to have a dark background that is not dull.
Something to suggest dark skies or cloth or deep waters.
I make squares using the colors in the left and right columns
The percentages are of black to middle gray.
I duplicated the blue tones and moved those squares OVER the grays.

I'm going to try this again with greens ! Also maybe on a curved shape?

Let me know if this gives you any useful ideas?

For some digital jam if you're amusing your self testing textures try these color and texture combos!

If you're worried about these being too transperent when you export them to png or jpg 

try starting with the color as a solid layer and then duplicating it and adding the texture filter to the top layer so you have a solid base?

Yes I was mocking all those porn and lewd obsessed people who act like the sole purpose of social media is for them to access cheap or free porn etc

So how did I make this shiny thicc curvy thing ?

Okay in Gimp create a 512 px square  then go to filters then down to Render and patterns and Qbist

Qbist is a random pattern generator 

choose a pattern 

Now go to Map Object and select Sphere

You should have a sphre with a bg with both showing the Qbist pattern

Select and Delete the  BG layer 

Now you have a neat shiny ball / sphere you can use for various things 

buttons part so space ship or futuristic buildings games

INKSCAPE ABC -B is for BEVEL

In keeping with the ABC theme here are 3 examples of Bevel Filters which have names starting with B.

Next time maybe these bevels applied to the letter B ? 

Inkscape Sunrise

INKSCAPE SUNRISE

Start with a background layer by making a rectangle and filling it with a simple gradient  with only two stops. I raised the bottom as darker objects are going there

Now to create a sun using a yellow circle with NO stroke and then texture filters 

Next we need contrast some dark foreground hills and mountains all coming from one single vector object that can be altered using handles and filters so we have two main objects:

The foreground object was a rectangle. I used the Node tool to curve the upper part.

Here's all 3 together. I duplicated the foreground object three times and flipped one.

The 3rd duplicate was darkened. You can change colors tints and tones using the color wheel or the bar on the botttom of the screen and I also had its height reduced just using the handles.

So you have a simple image and  you can edit to add more details like clouds .

You can export the PNG files and edit in other programs.

GIMP SUNRISE

Here's a demo of digital painting of a SUNRISE 

I don't have a tablet or digital pencil. I just used Gimp on a laptop with a touchpad.

Please note this is a demo not a just finished image but how I start one. 

This being GIMP I started off with a bottom layer and used Supernova to make the sun.

I limited the radius and turned off the rays and used the grid in Supernova to place the sun over a background of pink. Why pink? Well I am trying to suggest a dawn scene?

Next I used Airbrush to create Clouds and Sky using White and Blue over the Pink. I turned the Opacity down at the edges of the clouds.

Finally I added the Oilfy Filter and tweaked the Contrast.

Now I have a background I can use as it is or edit further to add more detail or tone to the sky and clouds  or I could add birds or mountains or darker clouds or shift the colors and tones to be redder or blend them more.

A is for Alpha and Alpha is A and here is a selection of Bold and Heavy and Wide A letter forms. All of these are the same font size despite their appearance on the page.

for my next demo I may compare Bold to Italic forms 

Eroded Metal Inkscape Filter

This weeks #Inkscape #demo is the #erodedmetal #filter

I set teh letter color to a dark gray and then added Eroded Material

It looks more bashed or hammered than eroded on this font but it could be a good filter to use to create walls gates doors shields or armour in illustrations or logos for metalwork sculpture or rock music?

I may try this on a couple of more fonts and different colors. With dozens of fonts available sometimes it takes a while to find the perfect or pleasing match of font and filter. Experiment with combinations people! I'm thinking a red earthy tone might emulate rust?

As ever hoping my experiments inspire you to create something even better or truly awesome!

Under the Extensions Submenu in Inkscape are some odd bits and pieces useful for generating geometrical shapes and diagrams

You can change the number of latitude and longitude lines and flatten a sphere but only a few other filters are useful. I've given 2 examples. Don't try changing the color the object will turn solid.
