This is a painting but can you tell me in what medium without enlarging the image?

With the variety of brushes available for digital painting I can get this effect without an actual "dry" brush or acrylic or oil paint. The main advantage I'm missing out on is rendering full impasto effects ?

This was done with Procreate.

P.S. It is actually winter where I am in the southern hemisphere and but I was thinking about a summer heat image that suggested moving light.

There are few filters with names starting with the letter D so for this years ABC of Inkscape Filter Demos I decided on D for DARK

I have once again been contemplating the problem of how to have a dark background that is not dull.
Something to suggest dark skies or cloth or deep waters.
I make squares using the colors in the left and right columns
The percentages are of black to middle gray.
I duplicated the blue tones and moved those squares OVER the grays.

I'm going to try this again with greens ! Also maybe on a curved shape?

Let me know if this gives you any useful ideas?

INKSCAPE SUNRISE

Start with a background layer by making a rectangle and filling it with a simple gradient  with only two stops. I raised the bottom as darker objects are going there

Now to create a sun using a yellow circle with NO stroke and then texture filters 

Next we need contrast some dark foreground hills and mountains all coming from one single vector object that can be altered using handles and filters so we have two main objects:

The foreground object was a rectangle. I used the Node tool to curve the upper part.

Here's all 3 together. I duplicated the foreground object three times and flipped one.

The 3rd duplicate was darkened. You can change colors tints and tones using the color wheel or the bar on the botttom of the screen and I also had its height reduced just using the handles.

So you have a simple image and  you can edit to add more details like clouds .

You can export the PNG files and edit in other programs.

Here's a demo of digital painting of a SUNRISE 

I don't have a tablet or digital pencil. I just used Gimp on a laptop with a touchpad.

Please note this is a demo not a just finished image but how I start one. 

This being GIMP I started off with a bottom layer and used Supernova to make the sun.

I limited the radius and turned off the rays and used the grid in Supernova to place the sun over a background of pink. Why pink? Well I am trying to suggest a dawn scene?

Next I used Airbrush to create Clouds and Sky using White and Blue over the Pink. I turned the Opacity down at the edges of the clouds.

Finally I added the Oilfy Filter and tweaked the Contrast.

Now I have a background I can use as it is or edit further to add more detail or tone to the sky and clouds  or I could add birds or mountains or darker clouds or shift the colors and tones to be redder or blend them more.

Rain Sequence

Yes just THREE SVG OBJECTS created and edited in #Inkscape were used!

The #Hanzi for #rain with a color change and a gradient and texture filter.

Then a plain blue square for a background.

Move the hanzi over it and raise to to top and then I exported the misty hills object from a different work and duplicated it changed the size and color and finally flipped one copy and changed the color for a cloud on top.

Finally I will import this# png into #gimp Crop it do one final Color edit and then I may offer it as an reward on #Patreon.

Why not do it in Watercolor? Doing it as a digital painting means I can keep SVG Objects and reuse them in other works and by combining filters  I can have an effect that looks like wet into wet on paper but have it over a solid background! Or change the whole background if I want to redo  it!

Painterly Six

A demo of Six #inkscape filters useful for #digital #painting .

I started with a plain square in the closest color wheel setting to ultramarine blue. All fill No Stroke. Remember not to select Stroke.

Gouache gives an effect that to me suggests a heavy soak on pigment and water onto paper.

Watercolor looks like wet into wet technique but with more water and less pigment.

Inkblot similar to Gouache but a bit softer looser ? on edges?
and would blend well with canvas and other rougher texture filters.

Silk Carpet try this one with gradients!

Felt despite its name also looks like wet into wet using the brush to move pigment and lift some off whether you're using paper or canvas or board!

Don't forget to experiment with blending these with say the Blotting Paper or Rough Paper or Torn Edges filters! Enjoy!

Inkscapes capacity to use 2 or 3 or more filters over a bottom layer that you can redo or remove allows you to use pixels like paint! For some kinds of illustration and prints this is an advantage and a timesaver. For just do it for fun!

Making Clouds in Inkscape.

Vector Objects combined with gradients and Texture filters can create some very "painterly" effects similar to watercolor ink and gouache.

A bit too strong ... so back to Supernova adding blue stars with different radii n spoke settings ... and  some contrast too

Not a prefect digital painting and I can think of two or three more edits I could do but a good starter with dark areas for a title possibilities for cropping and more.

Blue Gouache effect

I've been busy with a BIG project but to inspire you while I finish that here's a digital doodle!

I drew freeform with the pencil line tool in #inkscape and then added a color fill and gradient of ultramarine blue and then added the gouache filter.

The result actually look more like wet into wet watercolor on a heavy cold pressed paper but I'm thinking my little test might give people ideas for their own digital painting?
