CHERRY FOG

Lately I have been playing with the #Gimp #fog #filter as an alternate to using Airbrush

Its sakura time in Japanese and I wanted some interesting cherry pink and white backgrounds for other art so ...

The FOG filter in Gimp can be adjusted for color transparency and turbulence and you can super impose 2 or 3 layers with varying degrees of transparency and rotate and merge the layers.

It occurrs to me that if you are into designing and creating brushes this might be a great way to create brushes for skin and textile tones and shadows using of course different colors?

Look for more cherry pink theme art in this blog and on my patreon

An Color Edit Example

Color Editing Mosaics.

I'll like you to help with a comparision.

The first image just had one simple crop and tidy up of edges.

The Second I did color and tone edits on to try to be back to how I suspect the original mosaic looked before weathering and erosion etc .

Is there a difference or not?

Here's the first version.

and now the second with more edits!

What do you think?

Next time I'll be discussing the use of mosaic filters in Gimp and how I edited letter shapes to get forms that would work the best with that filter.

Oh and yes I did tweak both the reds and blues for this using the Color Tool to deepen shadows and strengthen highlights and mid tones I HOPE ???

Last Julys Patreon Rewards

These rewards from last year will be deleted or moved to my DeviantArt soon.
Last chance to get them !  All of these were made with Gimp.

BALLS! and Qbist

#Balls #qbist #gimp #digitalart

Bored due to social isolation?

WHO WANTS SOME BIG THICC SHINY BALLS !!!

What you were looking for porn?
Well why not stay a few seconds and learn something about making things with Qbist ?

Yes I was mocking all those porn and lewd obsessed people who act like the sole purpose of social media is for them to access cheap or free porn etc

So how did I make this shiny thicc curvy thing ?

Okay in Gimp create a 512 px square  then go to filters then down to Render and patterns and Qbist

Qbist is a random pattern generator
choose a pattern

Now go to Map Object and select Sphere

You should have a sphre with a bg with both showing the Qbist pattern

Select and Delete the  BG layer

Now you have a neat shiny ball / sphere you can use for various things

buttons part so space ship or futuristic buildings games

Enjoy

oh and check out my JVartndesign Patreon later this week after i upload some more Qbist freebies!

GIMP SUNRISE

#GIMP #sunrise #digitalpainting

Here's a demo of digital painting of a SUNRISE

I don't have a tablet or digital pencil. I just used Gimp on a laptop with a touchpad.

Please note this is a demo not a just finished image but how I start one.

This being GIMP I started off with a bottom layer and used Supernova to make the sun.

I limited the radius and turned off the rays and used the grid in Supernova to place the sun over a background of pink. Why pink? Well I am trying to suggest a dawn scene?

Next I used Airbrush to create Clouds and Sky using White and Blue over the Pink. I turned the Opacity down at the edges of the clouds.

Finally I added the Oilfy Filter and tweaked the Contrast.

Now I have a background I can use as it is or edit further to add more detail or tone to the sky and clouds  or I could add birds or mountains or darker clouds or shift the colors and tones to be redder or blend them more.

The files I used to make this will be available SOON as rewards on my Patreon and I may do a more finished version of the image as a print. Please visit JVartndesign

There will also be an Inkscape demo on a similar theme. Come back to view that. I will post it later this week.

Gimp Filters Cubism plus Embroidery

#Gimp #filters #cubism #embroidery
Take w plain red square created by selecting red as the color for a 512 px background layer

Add the Cubism filter

Nothing special
How can we make it more interesting ?

I added embroidery

A much richer texture is the result

Try this for yourself and remember you can edit cubist settings for different tile sizes !

Fractal Fabric

#gimp #fractals  #coloredit
Asemi demo of how to change a fractal to a less digital looking texture

so in Gimp I generated this pattern but it has little specks of green so I went to the Color Tools and turned green down and I also altered the Brightness and Contrast

then finally I decided to remove the last of the blue and apply a Gimp texture filter from the Impressionist submenu

Now it looks like batik or tapestry

I may add this to my Patreon as a freesaver

After Chaos

I can't find a filter I like starting with L so I may have to skip a few letters in my #Inkscape filters ABC sequence but here's something else that shows how #choas is #related to #complexity and vice versa

This was made with #gimp

#turbulence no pattern yet but lets add #smalltiles

patterns begin to appear from random pixels so next some cut and paste and rotating and flipping etc

We have a pattern but its kinda gaudy and glarish so color and texture edits

definitely better but could be even better

less texture more dark tones for contrast or I can change the colors again

either of these last two tiled or enlarged should work for my #redbubble shop or as a screensaver maybe  I'll use both variants?

Oh I'm thinking for doing some screensavers for my patreon too

Send feedback would you like this as a #Patreon reward or a #Redbubble product ?

ONE GIMP PATTERN transformed into ...

Sooo #Gimp comes with several Patterns and what what happens if you edit one ?

I filled a Background layer with the Leopard Skin Pattern

How to hide the tiling and make the s;potted pattern different and more interesting.

For a change I started with INVERT and then other filters

Three simple changes !

Playing with Lava

#lava #gimp #filters

Here's some results from playing with the Lava Filter in Gimp and using different gradients and then adding a few more edits.

A Blue Gradient with some Sharpen and a few other tweaks

Maxxing the darks and adding texture !

Use the Color tools to strengthen /greens and Blues !

Hope this gives you some ideas for texture experiments !

Tell me which one you like the most and I'll put it on my #deviantart

GIMP FILTERS COFFEE STAIN AND PLASMA

#gimp #filters #coffeestain #plasma #demo #freebie #opensource #creativecommons

One can get surprising satisfactory results combining Filters that seem unlikely matches.

In #Gimp under the #filters RENDER submenu theres CLOUD and within that Plasma

Next go to Filters - Decor - Coffeestain
I set the parameters for 5 stains and NO Darken

Then I cropped it a bit and changed it to a square and tiled it using Small Tiles

you can crop this in half again duplicate the uncropped part and flip and move it

I declare the files created for this demo to be #creativecommons #opensource
free for ALL non commercial usage
That means you  can use it for  your own portfolios or workshops or classes or demos  or as part of your own designs but you can not sell the results unless its a fund raiser for a genuine charity
Also please link back to this page or any of my other sites

Supporting my #redbubble shop would be greatly appreciated !

Making Mountains Two

#gimp #fractals #digitalart #patterns

Making Mountains TWO

I started out with this pattern generated by #gimp #fractalexplorer

then after some color edits and cropping and tiling I had

Copyright Julie Vaux 2018

Fine if I just wanted a print with a landscape orientation but I need a) to emphasize certain parts of the pattern and b) have proportions that work well on a variety of objects available from #Red Bubble

Copyright Julie Vaux 2018

So I changed the proportions to a square and finally I created yet another version with a portrait orientation and used the #emboss #filter

Copyright Julie Vaux 2018

Theres also one other version with a slightly different crop I may put on DeviantArt?

I hope like me you can see the triangles and curves as mountain slopes and ranges soaring into the sky? This will be going onto #redbubble very soon!

From Coffee Stain to JADE NIGHT

Recently I uploaded a design to my www.redbubble.com/people/scholara #redbubble called #jadenight. I used a slightly different method for that  one.

I started with a background /bottom layer that was dark blue and then I applied the #gimp #coffeestain #filter. This makes a washed out (semi)circular brown mark and turned my blues to sepia. Why did I use Coffee Stain ? I wanted to experiemtn and see what happened if I used the Color Edit Tools!

Copyright Julie Vaux 2018

Off to the Color Tools. Turn down the yellows reds blacks etc and way up for greens and blues and shift the saturation too! Yes much more interesting!

Copyright Julie Vaux 2018

Ah the blues are back along with some interesting greens but I need to make to crop and tile!

Copyright Julie Vaux 2018

This is a small version of the final image that was uploaded to Red Bubble.

I cropped the edges twice and still have a very faint line showing on a couple of products but I dont think it distracts too much ?
You can get this on scarves tote bags prints notebooks lotsa gifts !

Qbist on Gimp

If you're looking to create strong #geometric patterns with #gimp you might consider experimenting with the #qbist #filter as a starting point.

.

Some hints : Combine filters Think about XY co-ordinates. Don't just pixelize or shift or oilify.

Rainbow Bridge Copyright Julie Vaux 2017

This is Rainbow Bridge one of my latest designs on https://www.redbubble.com/people/scholara

It started as an image generated by Qbist in Gimp.

Spring is here!

Hello and I'm back from a medical break !

I'll try to can double or triple posts this week to make up for the hiatus!

I suspect as the Segoe family comes with MS Windows pre installed ( well it was on my laptop) it may be at risk on becoming the new Comic Sans a perfectly fine font family that ends up becoming unpopular because people have either seen it too often or used it without giving it a few tweaks.

Personally I find for titles a few merged layers of drop shadow can be a great help. Yes thats all I did. Change the font color to red and add some drop shadow to one edge in #GIMP . Now its in a different browser I can see I could have moved over the start of September but the letter forms are crisp and clear and not too flat and should work for web or print page title letterheads or banners.

Not every act of typographic crafting has to be a museum quality collectible.

If I've made you think about Segoe Script and September it has performed its function: communication about clarity.

And I'm pleased to only see one error I missed given the meds n my new inhaler seem to be effecting my eyes. First I'ld not read for long and now briefly I can manage without glasses ...though I shouldnt! Hence the break!

ONLY 100 and ONE Demo

Copyright Julie Vaux 2016
This PR image (more about that further down) was created using the #gimp #alienglow #filter over black letters. I selected yellow and black for the colors and the result ... no I didnt use Bevel or similar. Its mainly a tonal effect though I did do some cropping too.!

Hopefully it's striking and eyecatching as I need to remind people that if they shop on my #redbubble site AFTER 100 sales of EACH design I remove the image to increase its value for you by making it a limited edition.

Thats 100 sales regardless of whether the item is a sticker a print a duvet or a dress!

GIMP and Mosaic

#mosaic #gimp #filter

Gimp has a Mosaic filter I have experimented with now and then.

Here's two of my earliest attempts.

copyright Julie vaux 2016

For this one I added the lettering in a font I modified with more shadow to thicken the letters to look like a Roman uncial over a mosaic background.
Its just a bit too smooth ... another attempt

copyright julie vaux 2016

I wanted a mosaic background that emphasized the text so it stood out since this design was used on my Facebook page and the WEB.

This year however I decided to try to get both the background and lettering to work with the Mosaic filter. One tip: Add the mosaic filter LAST.

I wnated a background tonal range more like actual greek and roman mosaics ... so more matte and less shiny ...

copyright julie vaux 2016
unfinished work in progress

still not quite right so color edits and border added

another version  closer

copyright julie vaux 2016
unfinished work in progress

now the lettering looks much more like the irregular edges you see on ancient mosaics ... so theres about half a dozen merged layers in this

I'll show you the finished final versions that will become stickers on Red Bubble next week! I may also put one up on Patreon as an reward or Deviant as an example.

A note on color edits - UP the both the yellows and reds but a touch more blue and cyan in the shadows.

Resizing oddly with the mosaic filter to get it to work on a largely scale for a book cover I give found you have to work small and enlarge at the final edits otherwise the Mosaic effect just becomes a vague bumpy BG texture.

Now for a final comparison  a image of an actual mosaic  Roman Imperial era but Greek lettering!

MMM next experiment I probably should try to see if Ripple might make the tile edges more irregular?  I have used ochre backgrounds rather than gray since I think it works better in a browser ....after all unlike the greeks I do not have a supply of marble chips and scraps or actual peebles! It needs to work for print and web so I can share it with you !

You can copy and share these images for educational purposes but not for resale !

SAN DIEGO COMIC CON

Want to tell people to follow #sdcc ? or #sdcc2016

Here's your choice of 2 pngs and a jpg to use and the story and how I made them and why I think the Gimp JPG works best!

This png was made in #inkscape
I used Char font and added two layers of Flame and a Black Outline then exported to Gimp for a final crop. Its okay for twitter but ... lacks. I think its loud but not quite strong or bold enough despite the red?

So I tired again in #gimp with the same font but stronger reds and the Comics filter ... nope still not the best and for some reason  the letters are clearer at a smaller size though they seem clearer in the Chrome / Blogger browser then they did as icons in my Pictures folder? And now its too dark!

So lucky last a Gimp jpg with a different font

This is Verdana Bold with the same colors and filter

The lesson ? Resist the temptation to combine an ornament / fancy font with filters. Start with something plain and bold !

It may be I'm misjudging these and you prefer the 2 pngs?
