Decorative Ds

Yes I've been playing with Inkscape again!
Each of these letters has had at least one change if only to the color.
Hope these gives you some decorative inspiration if only to do better than me!

Discarded Designs

DISCARDED DESIGNS

TV and other media sometimes gives the false impression one can whip up a design and finish it in a matter of minutes or hours never days or weeks.

Well yes sometimes one can be on a roll and get a design to finishing point in one day but I always try to leave the design for a day or two and come back and take one last look and THEN look at it on a number of browsers and sites.

Sometimes it looks great in Inkscape or Gimp but once I upload at a smaller or larger size to Facebook Google Plus or Twitter ro Red Bubble or CafePress or Deviant it looks different.

This series was inspired by 1 Corinthians 13 :13

DITKO'S DOCTOR

You know Doctor Who?

Well Ditko's Doctor Strange is another 60s creation.

Ditko's lesser know earliest works were for 1950s pulp stories.

We've had Thor and Iron man and Wolverine and othe Marvel Movies and Agents of Shield has had some references to 60s gadgetry with Coulson's flying car  but  when oh when will we have a Doctor Strange movie and will it reflect Ditko's style in any way?  I hope so! 

Dunand and Design

One of the most famous and fabulous of the French Art Deco Crafts masters was Jean Dunand whose workshop and designs fused Asian lacquer and enamel techniques to 20th abstract designs.

Anything by Dunand is highly collectible and beautiful such as this vase above ... but ... he and other European Master Crafters tended to design and create for an ELITE MARKET unlike American Art Deco Industrial Designers or Ceramics Designers.

With the advent of 3d printers perhaps very so we can copy objects like this for a wider market ... or ... even better ... figure out how to make such objects in cheaper materials without losing any of  the loveliness?

Making Planets with GIMP - Part TWO

In part one we started with a texture brush before using Map Object - Sphere

Here's where we left off last time

Now for a whole planet and I've also blurred and softened the textures.

Great for a moon or ice world but lets try more color

Go into the color tools and colorize.

I choose greens.

Probably could be a bit flatter but those darker greens could be clouds or seas or something. Go enjoy your own experiments!

There's a rather good filter that turns flat objects into a SPHERE

Its under MAP OBJECTS

but you have to give it  something to work on!

I used a textured paint brushs and then added CHROME

oops once and rough but  applying CHROME might I lost my transparent Background !

So a bit of editing with the eraser and

NEXT

WE have the beginnings of something

A bit more shadow and tonal contrast added using smudge and eraser and other tools and brushes that darken and lighten

Part Two the whole planet and some color !

McDonaldtown station is a stop mostly used by rail workers and a few local residents and apparently by graffiti artists. If you're ever at that station look to the wall to the north. Lots of graffiti!

The first image is a png file based on a svg created in Inkscape using the Polygon and Color tools and the 2 handles on the Polygon.

Then I opened the png file in Gimp.

For each of the Gimp edited images three different filter plugins were combined.

I'd love to see these patterns on paper or fabric . However I don't have the funds for a major quality print run  and marketing too.

Fancy fabrics or why this blog is running late AGAIN

Fancy some fabric was created using Angelic War a font and this image is set to be larger than the original. I am STILL shudder Yes still sorting from my mother's room ... how one adult could squeeze so many fabric in a small space ... seriously it unpacked to more boxs than the bags it was in!

Anyway I'm going to be running Ads on Facebook and Gumtree for the next couple of weeks and if it doesnt sell its off to the salvos or op shop !

Now at the larger size some spacing errors that are NOT immediately obvious are showing so take and use this demo as a warning be extra careful with spacing and kerning if you're using Angelic War!

If you're trying to create "painterly" effects you can do it in a SVG program

Try these filters and don't forget to experiement with different combos of filters and plugins. I'll show you an even more texture version soon!
