YES GREEK HAS UNCIAL AND MINUSCULE TOO

#greek #uncial #minuscule #GreekAlphabet

Going from my older files over summer I found a folder full of scans from an now thoroughly out of print book which I'm not sure has been properly digitized so ...

Here are the Uncial Cursive and Minuscule forms of Greek letters

I believe whether you are a student of #typography or #palaeography you will find something of interest?

O Virtus Sapientiae

#sapientia #antiphon #hildegardeofbingen #latin #holywisdom

for many Catholics and Protestants its Holy Wisdom Day December 16 / 17

You may be aware of the standard Latin Antiphons but here's a hymn / antiphon created by Abbess Hildegarde of Bingen and yes its one of my #Xmas #freebies you can download it! Its a png file so you should be able to enlarge to match A4 and larger sheets of paper or other materials.

I hope I got the layout right. My aim was to suggest an Interlinear Gloss effect as seen in many manuscripts with the English translation  in a smaller font size in red.

About the translation. Those who know Latin may quibble I could have may the translation more poetic but I was striving to capture or echo both Hildegardes simple elegance and the spirit as well as the meaning hence sudat as works and virtus as excellence.

I choose a uncial font as that seemed to be the closest I could get to the originals.

Hildegarde's scribe probably would have used something closer to a half uncial?

Enjoy!

Another Uncial Sample

Another sample of ways to use UNCIAL FONTS.

I added multiple layers of drop shadows and merged them to create the broken effect with the drop shadow color set to a very dark gray and each progressive layer slighter less opaque and wider.

Two Uncial Fonts

#uncial #font #americanuncial #irishuncial #typography

There are four or five letters people seem to have particular trouble distinguishing in Uncial. I've contrasted their letter shapes in two popular fonts for you to study.

Vespasian Psalter

The #Vespasian #Psalter is one of the oldest extant books with old English text.

The scribe who created this psalter or hymn book of Psalms added what are called interlinear glosses between the lines of Latin text.

Despite the Roman name this is an English illuminated manuscript probably created about 750 ad somewhere in Kent perhaps in a monastery in Canterbury?

The scribe has created a work both beautiful and functional limiting ornament to the titles and headers and writing the main body of text in a strong clear hand with well spaced lines.

More Book of Kells images

Here's another Book of Kells image showing that , yes, it was readable!
The clerks and monks and scholaras and lay persons who viewed this were used to seeing and reading what moderern paleographers ( scholars of ancient scripts) call Insular Minuscule.
