Aldus Manutius and Greek Fonts

Aldus Manutius is the latin name of a scholar called Teobaldo Manutius who founded the Aldine Press in Venice.

Famous for developing Italic typefaces along with his partner Francesco Griffo he was also the first person to PRINT books in Greek.

His Greek font was modelled on the handwriting of Byzantine scholars.



The first Greek book printed in Europe was a dual language Greek Latin text a book on Greek grammar written by Constantine Lascaris called Erotemata.
